O’Neill High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence!  With a caring staff that includes an outstanding faculty, students at OHS have the luxury of experiencing some big school opportunities in a smaller rural size setting.  Technology integration in the classroom has been a strong focus at OHS for many years and as we begin the school year, students will continue to experience exciting learning activities and opportunities utilizing a wide variety of technology.    

It is imperative that students take ownership in their education.  Below are five keys and some thoughts that I believe can help any student to be successful and enjoy an awesome school experience.  

1. Be Present.  One of the most important, if not the most important aspect of any job is attendance.  School attendance, then, should be considered much the same.  The school’s attendance policy is aligned with Nebraska State Statute and I encourage both students and parents to take some time and read the school’s attendance policy prior to the start of the school year.

2. Be Prepared.  Many times, being organized and prepared for school each day can result in a greater chance for success.  Parents should take an active role in their child’s education.  Supporting and enforcing preparation at home is a big part of the success of any student.

3. Be Involved:  Be a positive part of your school.  There are many extra and co-curricular activities offered at OHS and I encourage students to consider trying something they feel they might enjoy.  Often, leadership skills and self-discipline are developed through participation in school activities.  If you choose not to participate in school activities…you can still be involved!  Often just being a positive supporter of your peers and an advocate for school pride can result in a great school experience.

4. Be Positive and Respectful:  Look for ways to be a positive part of the school.  Take pride in and help care for our school facilities.  Take care of yourself and each other.  Give a compliment now and then!  The cowardly act of bullying others is a growing problem nation-wide both in and out of schools.  Those who are disrespectful and/or feel it necessary to bully others do so by choice.  Few individuals can truly enjoy success when they are routinely negative and/or disrespectful.

5. Be Accountable:  This is your education…OWN IT!  The teachers and staff at OHS will put their best efforts forward each day to offer you the best education we possibly can.  Be accountable and remember…a high school diploma does not guarantee great success.  However, a high school diploma does little for you if you do not have one.
